After being sentenced to life, Riina orders more assassinations, including the failed attempt on Falcone's life and the murder of politician Salvo Lima. The climax comes on May 23, 1992, when Giovanni Falcone, his wife, and his bodyguards are killed by a TNT bomb near Capaci. A few months later, Paolo Borsellino is also killed. However, after a fellow mafioso turns state's witness, police finally track Riina to a villa in Palermo. In the final scene, Riina and Biagio Schirò have one last, clarifying conversation, closing the dramatic arc of their lives.
