Despite modest critical reception in India, the film gained cult status in Indonesia through repeated broadcasts on free-to-air television networks in the early 2000s. Drawing on audience interviews and archival TV schedules, the study explores how Indonesian audiences engaged with the film’s mix of action, comedy, and melodrama — often without legal streaming or purchase, i.e., through “free” broadcast access.
