In politics, trans representation has grown. Danica Roem became the first openly trans person elected to a U.S. state legislature (Virginia) in 2017, winning a seat by campaigning on traffic issues and forcing anti-trans opponents to confront her success. Sarah McBride (Delaware) became the first trans state senator and has since been elected to Congress, and multiple trans people serve in local governments nationwide.
To understand the present, one must look to the past. The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement did not begin with cisgender, white, middle-class gay men. It began with trans women of color.
