The cerita might whisper that the sinden and dalang become lovers, not through choice, but through the magic of the performance itself. As the dalang manipulates Arjuna’s puppet to court the angel Supraba, the sinden provides the angel’s coy reply. The line between fiction and reality dissolves. In these storylines, their romance is both sacred and transgressive—sacred because it completes the artistic yoga (union), but transgressive because it breaks the social contract of the village or court. Such tales often end in disaster: the gamelan stops, the dalang loses his spiritual power, and the sinden is exiled, becoming a wandering singer of her own tragic cerita .
