Starring Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala, the film draws clear inspiration from the Hollywood classic Kramer vs. Kramer . However, director Mansoor Khan adapts the narrative to suit the Indian sensibilities of the time. The story follows Rohit (Aamir Khan), a struggling music composer, and Kiran (Manisha Koirala), a trained classical singer who sacrifices her ambitions to be a homemaker. The narrative arc is not a simple tale of a villainous in-law or a external antagonist; rather, it is a study of internal conflict. The film bravely tackles the subject of female ambition in a patriarchal society. Kiran’s departure is not because she does not love her husband or son, but because she is suffocating within the confines of a role that denies her an identity beyond being a wife and mother.
